Vienna

The Austrian capital is simultaneously a buzzing modern European city and snapshot of to a time when Mozart and Beethoven roamed its streets. While visiting this epicenter of classical music and opera, a live performance or two is an absolute must. Taste some of Vienna's signature items like Sachertorte, locally-brewed beer, Melange (Viennese Coffee), and of course, Wiener Schnitzel. While Vienna is pretty expansive, its tremendous metro and tram systems make it easy to get to any of the incredible sights you want to see.

Karlskirche, Vienna

EXPLORE

Volksoper is a great venue to experience authentic Austrian opera without the enormous price tag. We purchased tickets for an operetta (more comedic) that had high production value and wonderful songs (along with English subtitles). Stop by Theatrepause across the street afterwards for a post-show dessert.

Mozart's Requiem Concert at Karlskirche is a spectacular evening of music in the most over-the-top setting. Around 40 musicians perform at the alter of the baroque St. Charles Church (aka Karlskirche). Purchase tickets ahead, but also arrive with plenty of time get a good seat. Rotating contemporary art installations bring a wondrous element to the space.

Belvedere Museum isn't just home to Klimt's masterpiece "The Kiss," its collection includes Monet, Van Gogh, and Schiele. Explore the vast Upper Belvedere palace and its grounds, a more manageable version of the half day required for a trip to Schonbrunn Palace outside the city.

Walking Tours are always a good way to get familiar with a new city. Hit all the major sights and learn about Viennese complicated history, including Hitler's annexation of Austria into Nazi Germany. If your tour doesn't start atop the Albertina Museum, make a point to go up. Public access to the terrace offers incredible views.

Imperial Treasury is a nice opportunity to see some serious bling. Part of the Hofburg Palace complex, the treasury holds the jewels and ornamental garments of the Habsburg dynasty.

EAT

Silberwirt serves up Austrian delicacies in a historic 14th century building with a romantic courtyard. Cozy and delicious.

Fromme Helene is decorated in vintage movie posters and makes you feel like you're in an old film yourself. Enjoy authentic Viennese dishes and beer from the oldest brewery in the world. Reservations recommended.

Pizzaria Luna Rossa is right around the corner from the Volksoper and offers a welcome break from schnitzel and potatoes. Fresh Italian-style salads, crispy pizzas, and red wine.

DRINK

Ron Con Soda Bar is right in the heart of the "Bermuda Triangle" district of loud bars, but offers a nice change of pace. Post up at one of the small tables at this corner bar and enjoy Cuban cocktails. Best of all, no smoking inside (which put us off many of the bars in the area).

The Bogside Inn was a happy accident find. Caught in the rain, we stopped in and quickly felt at home. A classic Irish pub with beers from all over the world, kind staff, (and free wifi for when you're in a pinch).

SHOP

Naschmarkt is Vienna's most popular food market, and the perfect hunting ground for all things vintage. If you get tired shopping for flea market goodies, stop in at one of the many mini-restaurants in the food section to enjoy everything from champagne to sausages. Keep an eye out for the Otto Wagner Art Nouveau houses nearby (beautifully painted exteriors).

STAY

Hotel Novotel Suites Wien City Donau is a nice home base as it is right near a very accessible metro stop. Funky modular styling of room elements make it feel very mid-century Austrian/German.
