Nothing like a little desert getaway to reset. I went with some girlfriends over New Years (highly recommend) and it was the perfect way to refuel for the new year ahead (plus some great birthday vibes). This town a few hours from LA has been the playground of Hollywood stars since the time of Frank Sinatra and Lucille Ball. With Joshua Tree nearby and retro stylings around every corner, Palm Springs makes for an amazing long weekend.
EXPLORE
Joshua Tree National Park is gorgeous way to spend a day in the desert. Start by watching the sunrise from Keys View (worth the early wake up, I promise) Hit the Cholla Garden and stop off at other interesting little spots to hike and explore. It's chilly in the morning, so layer up and bring plenty of water (there's nothing available in the park).
Pioneertown is a good stop on your way back from Joshua Tree. It's a funky little relic of 1940s western movies and actually has some year-round residents. Stop into one of the few shops and eat at Pappy and Harriet's.
Cabazon is another pit stop to/from LA. See the roadside attraction, the Cabazon Dinosaurs and pick up from treats (including a date shake) at Hadley Fruit Orchards.
EAT
Workshop Kitchen has an upscale menu in a very cool industrial setting, including outdoor seating. up the best tzatiki we had in Greece. Tucked in a little side street, this restaurant is the perfect place to spend an evening drinking wine (or ouzo) and relaxing. No website, address is 46, Chania 731 32.
Birba was recommended by a friend who ate there twice in two nights. The food is delicious and the patio dining can't be beat. Order the meatballs and roasted cauliflower.
El Jefe at the Saguaro Hotel is a vibrant spot for a more casual dinner option. Try to swing by on a Tuesday for cheap (but delicious tacos) and $5 margaritas.
DRINK
Truss and Twine is Workshop Kitchen's counterpart on the street and offers up stellar cocktails and little bites. Plus the people are cool and it's a great place for pre or post dinner.
Ace Hotel and Swim Club was our spot for New Year's Eve, but we also went back two nights later for karaoke in their side bar, the Amigo Room (and maybe embarrassed ourselves in front of Alton Brown, but he was nice anyway).
Hair of the Dog hit the spot when we needed an early morning place to watch the Michigan bowl game and put away from brews. A definite dive, you might be the only non-local in there, and that's just fine.
SHOP
Moorten Botanical Garden is site to explore, but also the best place to stop and pick up a few little cacti to bring home! Yes, you cna travel with plants domestically. Just give TSA a heads up before they reach in your bag and get a finger prick. Gorgeous plants and really reasonable prices.
