Prague

Updated after a recent revisit!

Essentially untouched by the bombings of WWII, the former capital of Bohemia still holds most of its old-world architecture. With breath-taking views and awesome beer, you won't want to leave Prague. If you're coming from another European city, I highly recommend traveling by train, the countryside between Berlin and Prague is partcularly beautiful (and I met a new friend on the journey).

View from St. Vitus Cathedral

EXPLORE

St. Vitus Cathedral on the Prague Castle grounds is a must-see view of the city. Make your way up the south tower, it's over 200 tight spiral steps, so be prepared.

Old Town Square is Prague's beautiful historic town center. Venture down each lane for something new. Street performers are ever-present but don't miss at least one viewing of the Prague Astronomical Clock as it strikes the hour.

Mucha Museum celebrates the life and work of famed Czech Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha. The museum is small, so if you're seeking more Art Nouveau and Art Deco vibes, continue on to the Municipal House.

SHOP

Bric a Brac Antiques is just off of Old Town Square. The owner, Milos, will probably insist you enjoy a cup of tea while you peruse the piles of odds and ends his shop has to offer.

Naplavka Farmers Market isn't far from the famous Dancing House. Open on Saturday mornings, the market is the perfect place to spend the morning strolling along the river while picking up all types of goods (my favorite were the lavender satchels).

EAT

Strahov Monastery Brewery is tucked in the hills behind Prague Castle. One of my favorite afternoons was spent in the beer garden, tasting the unfiltered micro-brews and noshing beer cheese and beer goulash (see a theme here?). On my second visit, I discovered their 800 year old wine cellar restaurant, worth checking out both venues. After you're thoroughly full, walk down via a back path which winds alongside tiny backyard vineyards.

Creperie U Slepe Kocicky located in Prague 7, offers both sweet and savory crepes and is the epitome of a comforting breakfast-for-dinner meal. The decor is cat-lady chic, but the food is stellar.

Sangam Indian Restaurant is the break you need from goulash and sausage. Both the food and service are fantastic, be sure to make a reservation in advance.

Tavern by Seven Swabians takes you back to Medieval times with it's cozy interior and hearty meals. Don't pass up the garlic soup.

STAY

The Golden Wheel Hotel is a charming boutique hotel at the foot of the castle. Attentive staff, cozy rooms, and great location.

Hostel Santini Prague is well situated, especially for solo travelers. The other guests are friendly but the place is quiet, not a party hostel. Located on a street with many of the international embassies, you might catch a non-violent protest or two.
